“Summertime and the livin’ is easy…. “ Arguably, the best place to be in the summer is outside. Firing up the grill, fishing on the lake, relaxing at the pool, watching your kids run through a sprinkler; there are 1001 amusements to keep you entertained outside during the summer heat.
When you do go outside, you know you need to protect your skin with a high spf sunscreen, shady hat, and breathable, light colored clothing. Maybe sometimes you miss a spot or forget altogether. Maybe you wanted a little extra sun. But when you come inside and cool off, you can’t; your skin is still hot to touch and it’s starting to look more red than pink.
Self Care for Sunburn
First things first, get out the aloe. Not the green tube of mystery lotion with the ingredient list you can’t pronounce, but 100% aloe gel. It feels even better if it’s been refrigerated. Coat the sun-burned area with the gel and sit in a cool place to help soothe the sting. Soak a towel or washcloth in cold water, wring it out, and place it gently on the burned area. A cotton ball or pad soaked in witch hazel and wiped over the burn can also ease the effects of too much sun. Some people also find relief by taking over the counter beta carotene.
Each of these strategies, and the variety of others you can google, will help a new burn, but what if your sun damage is older?
