Seeing a lump of tissue develop on your face can be a scary thing. Not knowing what caused it can leave you to suspect the worst.
The truth is that tumor-looking cysts on the skin are fairly common. There are typically two different kinds of skin bumps (cysts); fortunately, these growths are rarely cancerous and they’re not contagious.
Common Facial Cysts
Epidermoid and sebaceous cysts are the most common type of bumps that appear on the face.
An epidermoid cyst usually develops from an inflamed hair follicle and are most common in people that struggle with acne. They range in size from a quarter of an inch up to two inches.
A sebaceous cyst is caused to a blocked or damaged oil gland duct.
Both of these sacs contain a material that resembles white cheese, or toothpaste. The filling is foul smelling and consists of soggy keratin, which is the material that hair and the outer layer of your skin are made of.
What Can Be Done About Cysts?
Your cyst can be drained by inserting a needle into it and expelling the filling into an empty syringe. Though this method can significantly reduce the size of the bump, it will reappear eventually.
In order to get rid of the lump permanently, you’ll have to remove it surgically. Dr. Stong, our Atlanta facial plastic surgeon, has the skill and expertise to remove your facial cyst with little to no scarring.
