One of the most frequent questions we get asked about plastic surgery is how long the recovery takes. “I have a friend who had her eyelids done, and it was a year or more before she looked right again! Is it going to take that long for me to recover from my procedure?”
The truth is that every procedure is different and every body is as well. In general, the total recovery period for plastic or cosmetic surgery is 12 to 18 months. Your recovery time may be a little less than your friends, or it might be more. Here are some questions you should ask yourself:
Have you ever had surgery before? If so, how long did the anesthesia have an effect on you?
If you have had surgery before, even having your wisdom teeth removed, you may have noticed how the medication affects your body. For some people, anesthesia wears off in a timely manner with no negative side effects. Others have trouble coming out of anesthesia or have nausea and vomiting with it. You can expect similar reactions as you’ve experienced previously.
How long did it take you to recover, compared to what your doctor expected?
Your recovery can depend on your body’s metabolism and nutrient intake: the healthier you are and the better diet you eat, the quicker you recover from any type of procedure.
How long does it take you to feel normal again after strenuous activity? Quick recovery usually indicates that you are healthy and active. This is also a good sign that you will have an easier time after surgery when it comes to “bouncing back” into your normal routine.
