Cosmetic procedures are some of the most effective ways to turn back the clock on aging and regain that youthful glow. If you’re not careful though, the way you care for your skin afterwards can work against its effects.
Ditch these bad face-washing habits to help enhance the results of your facial plastic surgery procedure, and keep your skin looking bright, vibrant and smooth.
Using the wrong cleanser. Each person’s skin is different, and using the right cleanser is one of the most important parts of a good skin-care routine. If you’ve got drier skin, opt for a creamy, hydrating, lotion-based cleanser. If you’re skin is more oily, or a combination of both, your best bet is a foam or gel cleanser. And steer clear of harsh chemical ingredients that can irritate skin and strip it of moisture, increasing the likelihood of fine lines and wrinkles.
Over-exfoliation. Exfoliating your skin is great way to encourage cell turnover and slough off dead skin cells that can make skin look grey, dull, and tired. But overdoing it can lead to dryness, redness and irritation. It can also cause your skin to over-produce oil, making it greasy and acne-prone. Stick to once or twice per week with a rotating brush for dewy, youthful skin. If you use a washcloth, (very) gentle exfoliating can be done every other day. Just keep in mind to not reuse washcloths, since they can be breeding grounds for bacteria.
Not washing off makeup. It can be tough to muster the energy to take your makeup off after a long day, but it really can do a number on your complexion if you don’t. Makeup left on overnight clogs the pores and prevents cells from turning over. The pollution and free radicals left on skin overnight also break down collagen, causing wrinkling over time.
Using water that’s too hot. This is more likely if you wash in the shower rather than over the sink. Washing your face with water that’s too hot can dry it out, especially in the winter, encouraging the production of fine lines and wrinkles, and leaving the face looking rough and dull.
